Meet Your Future Neighbors: Jennifer and Dennis Kogut

Jennifer and Dennis Kogut’s story is one of lifelong connection, shared experiences, and intentional decisions that have shaped their journey together. Their bond began in childhood in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, a small city southeast of Pittsburgh. They met in first grade, growing up as close friends and attending the same schools through high school. Life took them in different directions for college, but a pivotal moment changed everything. One summer, Jennifer worked at a resort in New York, and when the season ended, Dennis offered to drive her home. That trip marked the beginning of something new—by the time they returned, they both knew their friendship had transformed into something deeper. They’ve been together ever since and will celebrate their 55th wedding anniversary in March.
Both Jennifer and Dennis pursued meaningful careers built on a passion for learning and helping others. Jennifer studied science at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, later earning a master’s degrees and additional graduate level certifications. Teaching was her calling, and she spent most of her career in the classroom, primarily as a high school biology teacher. Her dedication even earned her Ohio’s Biology Teacher of the Year award. When her children were young, she took a break from teaching and explored new paths, including accounting and kitchen design. After returning to education, she eventually moved into administration, retiring as the Executive Director of Curriculum and Assessment for her school district.
Dennis initially attended Penn State before finishing his degree in psychology at Point Park University. He went on to earn his doctorate from the University of Toledo, dedicating his career to forensic and clinical psychology. While he initially worked in criminal forensics, he found his true passion in behavioral medicine, training primary care physicians on the psychological aspects of healthcare as the Director of Behavioral Medicine of a Family Practice Residency program. Over time, he and his business partner built a thriving private practice, leading a team of psychologists, social workers, and a psychiatrist. Even in retirement, his influence remains, as his practice continues to thrive under the direction of a younger partner as Central Behavioral Healthcare. He was also an active member of the Ohio Psychological Association, serving for years as Chairman of the Ethics Committee.
While work was fulfilling, family has always been at the heart of the Koguts’ lives. They raised two children—a son now living in Seattle, a physician associated with the University of Washington, and a daughter in Franklin, Tennessee. Their family has since grown to include a grandson, a granddaughter, and a great-grandson, all of whom live just minutes away in Spring Hill. Seven years ago, Jennifer and Dennis made the decision to leave Toledo and move closer to their loved ones. They cherished the opportunity to attend their grandson’s football games and be an active presence in their grandchildren’s lives. Though their grandchildren are now grown with families of their own, the Koguts remain a central part of their lives, often gathering for Sunday meals and special occasions.
As the years passed, Jennifer and Dennis began thinking about their next steps. They loved their home in a 55+ community, where they had been among the first residents, but they knew they wanted to be proactive about the future. They had no desire to place the burden of care on their daughter, and after learning about Belle Springs, they joined an early focus group for the community. Excited by the vision, they became Priority Members right away. Their enthusiasm was contagious—several friends from their current neighborhood also signed on, ensuring they would have a built-in community when they moved.
Initially, the couple considered a villa or cottage, but the convenience of having everything under one roof ultimately won them over. They chose a two-bedroom apartment, appreciating the peace of mind that if one of them ever needed additional care, they could remain close to one another.
Even as they slow down, Jennifer and Dennis continue to enjoy the things they love. They are avid bridge players, with Jennifer also enjoying Mahjong and Dennis occasionally playing pickleball. They both love reading, with interests ranging from fiction to history, and while they cook and garden less than before, they still enjoy hosting small gatherings. More than anything, they cherish the time spent with family.
For the Koguts, life has always been about meaningful choices—whether it was the decision to spend a summer drive together all those years ago or the thoughtful planning of their next chapter. With Belle Springs on the horizon, they are looking forward to a future filled with connection, comfort, and the same love that has carried them through a lifetime together. And now, as they encourage friends to join them on this journey, they know that great friends make great neighbors.
